Don Quixote, when the canon persists in denouncing the books, points out that the books have been printed with the king's license and enjoyed by his subjects. The books raise spirits and fill the reader with wonder.

The canon's servants are sitting down to supper when a goat comes up to them. A goatherd arrives a few seconds later. The canon invites him to dine with them and wait for the spooked goat to calm down. The goatherd offers to tell a story.
